Playing natural harmonics on the guitar is a fun technique that can add a new dimension to your playing. Harmonics are chime-like notes that can be sounded using different left hand techniques than you would otherwise use. Here’s how to play them:
Place your first finger above the 12th fret on the sixth string. You can easily find the 12th fret on most guitars because it usually has a fret marker that is different than the rest - like two dots instead of one.
It is important that you place your finger directly above the fret itself. Your finger should not be behind the fret like it would when playing “normal” notes on the guitar.
Also, you should touch the string as lightly as possible. Don’t push the string down against the fretboard as you normally would. Just very gently touch the string directly above the 12th fret.
Now pick the 6th string and then pull your finger away from it. If you executed everything correctly you should hear a bell-like note even after you remove your finger. Once you’ve mastered this try it on all six strings. On the thinner strings you really need to use a very light touch.

After you are comfortable playing these harmonics try playing them above the 7th fret and then above the 5th fret. These will be a little more difficult to play clearly but if you spend just a little time experimenting with different amounts of pressure and slightly different finger placements you will likely find you can play all of the harmonics without much trouble.
Have a good one,
Brian
